Sonification of Copernicus satellite imagery and historical climate data for the ESA Frascati 2026 symposium. Granular synthesis, harmonic drones, Schumann resonance.

Terra Viva

An interactive audiovisual work created for the ESA (European Space Agency) Frascati 2026 symposium (University of Rome Tor Vergata, Master in Sonic Arts). It transforms Copernicus satellite imagery and four historical climate series (temperature from 1950, CO₂ from 1958, Arctic ice from 1979, sea level from 1993) into generative electroacoustic composition.

Five performance modes. Explore (web fruition scanning the image with the mouse), Auto Performance (a five-minute automatic concert sequence with climate-data HUD), Sonification (a vertical playhead reading the image as a spectral score, hybrid synthesis of sixteen filtered noise bands and thirty-two additive oscillators), Climate Data (a sonic journey 1950 to 2025 with four sonified variables), Live Performance (real-time MIDI control).

The audio engine is built on the native Web Audio API, with granular synthesis with pre-rendered grains, resonant drones on four harmonic oscillators with microtonal LFOs, coupled subtractive and additive synthesis. The visual pipeline uses three-pass GLSL shaders with a Ken Burns effect. The Schumann resonance (7.83 Hz) modulates the drones and becomes audible in the final coda at 62.64 Hz. The work closes with the Earth seen from 36,000 km. Works offline via Service Worker.
